Why Are My Plant's Leaves Turning Yellow?

Yellow leaves are most often caused by overwatering, but underwatering, low light, nutrient deficiency, and normal aging can all cause them too. Looking at which leaves are yellowing and what the soil feels like usually points to the cause.

Is it overwatering?

This is the most common cause. If the soil stays wet, the lower or older leaves turn yellow while still soft, and the plant may smell musty, roots are probably struggling. Let the soil dry out and make sure the pot drains. See overwatering vs underwatering.

Is it underwatering?

Yellowing from thirst usually comes with dry soil, and leaves often turn crispy or curl rather than staying soft. Water thoroughly and check if the soil has become so dry it repels water.

Could it be too little light?

Plants in low light may yellow and drop leaves, and new growth often looks pale and stretched. Move the plant closer to a window. Our guide on how much light houseplants need explains the levels.

Could it be a nutrient problem?

If the plant has been in the same soil for a long time and growth has slowed, an overall pale yellow across leaves can mean it needs feeding. Yellowing between the veins can also point to a nutrient issue. Fertilize lightly during the growing season and see if new growth improves.

Is it just normal aging?

Yes, sometimes. If only one older, bottom leaf turns yellow every so often and the rest of the plant looks healthy and is growing, it is usually the plant shedding an old leaf. Remove it and carry on.

Could it be pests or a recent change?

Sticky residue, webbing, or specks on the leaves suggest pests, and yellow stippling can point to spider mites. Moving, repotting, or a sudden change in light or temperature can also cause a temporary yellowing as the plant adjusts.

What should I do first?

Check the soil moisture, the light, and whether anything changed recently. If you are still unsure, upload a photo for a health check to get a first read on the likely cause.
